Biodiesel is a cleaner burning diesel placement fuel made from natural renewable sources such as new and used vegetable oils and animal fats. Biodiesel can be used just like petroleum diesel in compression-ignition engines. Blends of various percentages of biodiesel up to 20% can be used without any engine modifications. Higher blends may be used in some engines but may require some modification.

Using biodiesel in a conventional diesel engine reduces emissions of unburned hydrocarbons such as carbon monoxide, sulfates, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and particulate matter.
